Working with the Passive

Hello LINC 7 Students!

In our inquiry into the passive, we start with the basics, which you probably learned in LINC 6.

Here's a great review website.

But we have to remember that some verbs CANNOT be put into the passive form!

Here are some of the most common "intransitive" verbs -- which don't allow passive form:

arrive become belong collapse cost depend die emerge exist go

happen laugh occur rise sit sleep stay swim jump have

For example, you can't say or write: "We were arrived at nine o'clock." WRONG

For example, you can't say or write: "It was happened yesterday." WRONG

For example, you can't say or write: "She is died in a car accident." WRONG

For example, you can't say or write: "The meal was cost $42.56." WRONG
